Vehicle Service Contract Myths

Get the Truth
Myth: Vehicle Service Contracts are double coverage
Truth: Vehicle Service Contracts are NOT double coverage. Vehicle Service Contracts provide coverage of repairs not provided by manufacturer warranties, and extend the coverage on the vehicle beyond the original manufacturer's standard warranty period. They do not give you unnecessary duplicate coverage.

Myth: I should wait to purchase a Vehicle Service Contract
Truth: Vehicle Service Contracts continue after the manufacturer's warranty expires, protecting your vehicle for as long as you own it. To avoid interruption in coverage, and to get the lowest price, you should purchase a vehicle service contract as early as possible. If you have a lapse in coverage, the vehicle service contract will be significantly more expensive.

It is also a common misconception that by waiting to purchase vehicle service contract coverage, you will get coverage for a longer time. You are only buying total mileage coverage, not addition of mileage to your current total.

Don’t forget… Labor rates have risen by $15-$20 per hour over the past several years. ALL Vehicle Service Contracts take this fact into account. Don’t wait — pay for tomorrow’s repairs at today’s costs!

Myth: You are required to purchase a vehicle service contract to qualify for financing.
Truth: No customer is required to increase the amount of their car loan by adding their vehicle service contract to obtain financing. In fact, by including the vehicle service contract in your car purchase, you will be stuck paying additional interest. Approval or denial for financing is based solely upon your credit. And, EWS can offer you interest free financing.

Myth: I have a vehicle service contract, so I don't need to worry about my car.
Truth: Proper basic maintenance is important for your car. Neglecting this responsibility can put your investment at risk and potentially jeopardize your claims getting paid. All vehicle service contracts require that you properly maintain your vehicle as outlined in your car's owners manual.

Myth: My dealer does not accept third party service contracts for repairs.
Truth: Your vehicle service contract is set up to pay any repair facility immediately over the telephone by credit card, so no dealer should object to accepting the vehicle service contract. In fact, your vehicle service contract will require the dealer to do less paperwork and they won’t have to wait for reimbursement.

Myth: I don’t need a vehicle service contract — I already have powertrain coverage that extends beyond my original bumper-to-bumper coverage.
Truth: Once your bumper-to-bumper coverage lapses and you only have a powertrain warranty, you will lack coverage for items including air conditioning, electronic sensors, auto computers and more — the parts and systems of your car that statistically fail on the most frequent basis.
The Wrap vehicle service contract is a new type of vehicle service contract, offering additional coverage for new vehicles whose powertrain warranty runs longer than the original bumper-to-bumper plan from the manufacturer. Certified used and off-lease vehicles with an extended powertrain warranty, may be eligible for this type of vehicle service contract as well. The manufacturer's powertrain warranty only covers about ¼ of the vehicle's components. Wrap coverage picks up the remaining ¾ of the vehicle's components for the same term, including such things as air conditioning, electronics, electrical, brakes, ABS and much more.

It is important to understand that even though the manufacturers are extending the original warranty, the additional coverage being offered is very limited. After the initial bumper-to-bumper warranty, longer powertrain warranties only cover components such as the engine and transmission, and may not be transferable to other owners upon sale. Wrap programs compliment the longer powertrain warranties being offered, preventing the consumer from having to buy coverage they already have from the manufacturer.
